American indie rock band

Jeff Mangum started this band in Ruston, Louisiana in the late '80s as a bedroom project called Milk, trading homemade tapes with friends who'd later form the Elephant 6 collective. The 1998 album In the Aeroplane Over the Sea barely registered at first — mixed reviews, modest sales — but slowly became one of indie rock's most mythologized records, its surreal lyrics and fuzzy psychedelic folk inspiring everyone from Arcade Fire to the Decemberists. You got into them in early 2013, right as they came out of hiatus for that reunion tour, and while the intensity has cooled, Aeroplane still gets the occasional spin all these years later.
