Young Oceans grew out of a SoHo apartment where Trinity Grace Church musicians reimagined hymns as meditative neo-alternative worship — untethered from congregational structure, more companion to reflective prayer than Sunday service. Before the Beginning is the instrumental version of their 2012 debut, stripping away words to let the arrangements breathe on their own. You picked it up in summer 2014 and returned once more the following spring, mostly cycling through the opening tracks and "Great Spirit" — a brief season of contemplative backdrop that didn't outlast 2016.
