the avett brothers

The Avett Brothers came out of North Carolina mixing bluegrass, folk, punk energy, and pop hooks into something the San Francisco Chronicle once compared to Townes Van Zandt's sadness meeting the Ramones' raw punch. This early album leans harder into stripped-down acoustic twang and rootsy storytelling than their later work. It clicked for you in late 2021, mostly through "Distraction #74" and the bittersweet sway of "Famous Flower Of Manhattan," before fading into occasional revisits.
