Claude says:Beck reunited with the Dust Brothers for this 2005 album after nearly a decade, chasing some of the scruffy sample-collage magic of Odelay while folding in the looser, more lived-in feel he'd developed since. The title comes from a word he heard growing up in L.A.'s Chicano neighborhoods — slang for a light-skinned kid — and the record has that same mix of street-level grit and studio shimmer, with Jack White on bass for "Go It Alone" and Christina Ricci nailing the spoken part on "Hell Yes" after weeks of failed sushi-waitress auditions. You circled it a few times in 2006 and 2007 without committing, then it clicked in early 2009 and became a fixture you return to every couple of years, always leaning on "E-Pro" and "Black Tambourine" but working through the whole middle stretch.
