Claude says:Ben Gibbard and Jimmy Tamborello mailed CD-Rs back and forth between Seattle and Los Angeles to build this indietronica landmark — Gibbard writing lyrics and singing over Tamborello's glitchy beats and manipulated samples, with guest spots from Jenny Lewis and Chris Walla. Released on Sub Pop in 2003, it became the label's second-biggest seller ever, driven by "Such Great Heights" and a slow-burn following despite minimal promotion. You had a few scattered plays in 2006–2008 that didn't stick, but it clicked for real in March 2009 — six years after release — and you've returned to it in waves ever since, with "Such Great Heights" (both versions) and "Nothing Better" leading the way.
