Claude says:The Decemberists' third album came together in a rented Portland church in 2004, with Chris Walla producing and the band pulling strategies from slips of paper in a bike helmet to keep the sessions loose. Accordion and hurdy-gurdy flesh out these literary folk-rock story-songs about mariners and rogues — the kind of baroque indie that was everywhere in 2005 and landed Picaresque on year-end lists. You grabbed it a decade later and have circled back occasionally, enough to know "The Engine Driver" and "The Mariner's Revenge Song" hit hardest.
