Claude says:Ray LaMontagne's debut arrived in 2004 via Ethan Johns' production — raspy-voiced Maine folk that placed cuts on Rescue Me and Grey's Anatomy and sold a quarter-million copies on the strength of aching restraint. It clicked for you in early 2007, a couple of stray plays the year prior notwithstanding, and you leaned hardest into it during a sustained run in 2009. "Jolene" and the title track remain the anchors, though you cycle through "Hold You in My Arms," "All the Wild Horses," and "Burn" often enough to suggest the whole front half still works.
