Claude says:Death Cab's sixth record and only Billboard number one, Narrow Stairs came out of two years on the road and a deliberate move toward heavier, more dissonant terrain — Chris Walla called it "lunar" and "abrasive," citing sludgy metal and synth-punk as touchstones, and the result includes a ten-minute Can jam alongside the brooding, bass-driven "I Will Possess Your Heart." A few stray plays in the summer it dropped, but it didn't really click until December 2008; since then you've kept coming back in waves, leaning hardest on "I Will Possess Your Heart" and "Grapevine Fires" but also spending real time with deeper cuts like "Bixby Canyon Bridge" and "Long Division."
